Praxis II ® Subject Assessments
During the 2011-12 legislative session, the Iowa legislature passed a law requiring all teacher candidates to complete an assessment in both pedagogy and content for licensure. This law applies to both elementary and secondary education majors. This new law pertains only to licensure and does not affect Praxis I requirements for entrance to Cornell College's Teacher Education Program. Praxis Core Reading, Writing, and Math tests remain a requirement for entrance to the program.
The Iowa Department of Education decided which Praxis II tests will be administered and set the passing requirement to be above the 25th percentile. This means you must score above the lowest 25 percent of test takers. This law goes into effect for all students recommended for licensure on or after January 1, 2013.
Students will be required to take two tests for licensure, one in pedagogy and one in content. No candidates will be required to take more than two tests. Content tests will be determined according to your major content. Those adding additional endorsements will not be tested on the additional endorsements.
Elementary Education K-6
- Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT): K-6; Test Code 0622/5622, Minimum Score 168
- Elementary Education: Content Knowledge; Test Code 0014/5018, Minimum Score 156*
*The State Legislature has authorized an exemption to allow test 0011/5011 to count toward the pedagogy requirement for elementary education teachers who are graduating after January 1, 2013, and who have already taken or enrolled to take the 0011/5011 test. Please note the exemption is only for the pedagogy requirement. All elementary candidates are still required to take the 0014/5018 content assessment.
Secondary Education 7-12 and Post Baccalaureate Certification
- Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT): 7-12; Test Code 0624/5624, Minimum Score 166
- The content test associated with the student's content (subject) area: Secondary Content Area Test Codes and Minimum Scores.
If the Praxis II is not passed by August after graduation and the student has not been recommended for licensure, there is an option that allows students to substitute teach until the Praxis has been passed. A student must apply directly to the BOEE for "substitute authorization". This certificate will allow the student to sub on a day to day basis. It does not allow for a long-term subbing position.
The minimum scores are for 2017 and will vary from year to year.
Cornell offers free access to Praxis II practice guides and exams through Learning Express under the e-resources link on the library's homepage. You need to create a free account to log in.
