“Tell them I will use anything within my power,
whether it be the Beatles, Beethoven, or Billie Holliday,
to teach these kids to love music.”
–Mr. Holland from Disney’s Mr. Holland’s Opus.

Qualitative Research

Most instrumentalists describe their beginning band experiences with words such as “fun,” “encouraging,” and “exciting.” The same students would agree that most of the band members who were in their beginning band class section didn’t make it to graduation. There is ample research concerning overall motivation needed in instrumental music. This research encompasses techniques for successful recruitment, motivation of advanced students, and how to motivate an entire ensemble.

However, there does not appear to be any research concerning motivating struggling beginning band students. How do band directors motivate these beginning band members before they get to the “I quit” stage? This research looks at motivational techniques used for recruitment, advanced students, and ensembles and suggests ways to use them to work with the struggling beginning band student.
