Student Teacher: Roosevelt Middle School, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
August-December 2006

Instrumental :

  • Worked with the three Roosevelt Middle School Bands, grades 6-8
  • Taught approximately 150 students in a school of 600, with over 50 percents of students were on free or reduced lunch
  • Assisted in full band rehearsal and full class instruction, teaching and conducting one piece for each band in concert
  • Taught small group and individual instrument lessons and adapted instruction for a range of special needs and talented and gifted students
  • Assisted in preparing the 8 th grade band for the Cedar Rapids Five Seasons Marching Band Invitational as well as assisting behind-the-scenes operations such as scorekeeping and timing
  • Worked with students to prepare auditions for NEIBA (Northeast Iowa Bandmaster’s Association) and Marion Honor Bands and assisted in selecting nominees
  • Worked outside of school hours with the music staff in developing and testing a standardized assessment for band students in response to district curriculum goals

Vocal :

  • Worked with ten separate choir classes in grades 6-8, with class sizes ranging between 20 to 65 students, several classes including special needs students
  • Reviewed familiar warm-ups and introduced a new series of warm-ups designed to engage students in all grade levels
  • Selected appropriate grade level music pieces for performance, including pieces with a variety of languages and cultural regions of the world
  • Used a variety of instructional methods to review basic music theory, including interactive rhythm games and incorporating this instruction into performance pieces
  • Planned and implemented instruction using a variety of technologies including electronic keyboards, overhead projections, and music recordings
