PRE-PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Multiage 1st and 2nd Grade, Van Allen Elementary School, North Liberty, Iowa. August-November 2006.
Language Arts:

  • Develop fluency by focusing on reading strategies and choosing books for appropriate each small group’s reading level.
  • Worked on different aspects of the writing process edited and published students’ silly animal stories in a book for the classroom.
  • Introduced “popcorn” reading as a way to motivate students and keep them on task during whole group reading time.
  • Developed a sense of student responsibility for their own learning through learning centers.

Mathematics:

  • Discussed and modeled a variety of ways to solve story problems using manipulatives and encouraging students to share their ideas on how to solve story problems.
  • Developed an understanding of strategies (doubles, tens family), by using hands on material to facilitate quick recognition of facts and help students see how to solve more complex problems.
  • Incorporated distributive practice, daily math review, and number of the day as ways to launch lessons and peak student interest.
  • Developed students’ skills of organization and familiarity with different mathematical procedures through math journaling.

Science:

  • Emphasized the needs of all living things through experiments on bean seeds in different environments.
  • Modeled how to organize and record data in a chart to assist students’ initial understanding of the scientific process.
  • Assessed student learning by incorporating students’ science journals in which they recorded their individual observations and new vocabulary.

Social Studies:

  • Discussed the six pillars of character and related them to students’ real-life situations to help students determine how to become a good citizen.
  • Developed map reading skills using maps, grids, symbols, and cardinal directions to find specific places.
  • Emphasized the benefits of cooperative learning through the use of student assembly lines and working together to complete complicated tasks.

Special:

  • Kept communication lines open with parents through monthly newsletters and before and after school contact.
  • Promoted effective communication with families by participating in parent-teacher conferences and requesting parental feedback on their student’s needs.
  • Facilitated a field trip to Englert theatre for a performance of Seussical the Musical as a concluding activity for an author study.

  • Taught hands-on lessons on rocks and minerals by testing different qualities that these materials are made of.
