Science
We have previously spent a considerable amount of time learning about what living things need to grow and we began conducting an experiment to see what would happen to a bean plant if one of its basic needs was not being met. We had four experimental plants: one does not receive water, one does not have soil, one does not receive light, and one does not have space. Students need to learn how to organize and record the data that they collect from an experiment; this lesson is designed to provide the opportunity to observe the experimental plants and record any changes seen.
Mathematics
Story problems can be confusing and difficult to understand. Students need to have opportunities to take prior knowledge of addition and subtraction strategies and apply it to story problems. Students that can use these strategies quickly develop fluency in combing problems. When students have the freedom to solve a problem in the way that makes the most sense to them, they will develop confidence in their abilities and thrive.
Social Studies
It is important for students to learn how to read a map and to be able to find specific places. Students need to know how to give directions to someone that will lead them to the correct place. Talking about why the different places on the placards are important is a great way to connect back to prior lessons.
Language Arts
Students will often come across unknown words in their daily school work and individual reading. It is important for students to understand how to effectively use a dictionary to find unknown words and learn new definitions. Using a dictionary can often be confusing and difficult, so students will work with peers to help guide each other in the right direction. The students love examining the dictionary and the Digging through the Dictionary sheets will be a great way to monitor their progress.
Reading
It is important for students to have instructional reading practice where the teacher can provide small group support with books geared towards the students' level. This week, all four groups are reading chapter books (ranging from emergent to advanced) on the topic of Thanksgiving
(fiction and nonfiction).
