Title: Digging through the Dictionary
Grade Level: Second Grade
Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to use their knowledge of ABC order to look for words in a dictionary.
  2. Students will be able to use guide words to look up words in a dictionary
  3. Students will be able to use a dictionary to define new words.
  4. Students will be able to work cooperatively in pairs.

National Standards:

  • IRA 2.1: Use instructional grouping options (individual, small-group, whole-class, and computer-based) as appropriate for accomplishing given purposes.

Rationale:
Students will often come across unknown words in their daily school work and individual reading. It is important for students to understand how to effectively use a dictionary to find unknown words and learn new definitions. Using a dictionary can often be confusing and difficult, so students will work with peers to help guide each other in the right direction. The students love examining the dictionary and the Digging through the Dictionary sheets will be a great way to monitor their progress.

Suggested Time: 30 Minutes

Organization of Instruction:

Materials/Resources Needed:

  • Digging through the Dictionary Sheets (see attached)
  • Dictionaries
  • Student Reading Packets (one per student)
  • Envelope of Words

Procedure:

  • Launch: Have students get a dictionary and meet in a circle on the rug.
    • Allow students a few minutes to explore the dictionary.
  • Have students to close the dictionary and put it on the floor in front of them.
  • Review: Entry Word:
    • Have the students open up to page 35.
    • Ask someone to find a word defined on that page.
      • How do we do this?
    • Who remembers from yesterday what these words are called? How are they organized in the dictionary? What do you notice about them?
    • How do we put words in alphabetical order?
  • Review: Guide Words:
    • Direct the students to the words at the top of each column.
    • Who remembers what these words are called? Why are they important when looking up words in a dictionary?
    • Point out that the entry words on the page come between the guide words alphabetically: look at alphabet listed on the side of each page.
  • Spent time exploring the dictionary as a whole group and trying to find words drawn out of an envelope.
  • Show students a Digging through the Dictionary sheet and review how to complete each step.
  • Hand out new reading packets and have students complete p. 1
    • Have a student pick a word out of the envelope and work together in partners to complete one sheet.
  • Closing: Have students clean up, put dictionaries back on the shelf, and gather back in a circle on the rug. Allow students to share the words they looked up and the new definitions that they learned.

Assessment:
Formative:

  • Do the students use the guide words to help find words in the dictionary?
  • Do the students participate in discussion (comprehension)?
  • Can students give an appropriate definition of their word?
  • Do the students provide assistance and work together with their partner?
  • Look through p.1 Digging through the Dictionary and provide feedback to students.

Adapting of Instruction:

  • Gearing Up: When students finish the worksheet, allow them to pick words for their partner to look up in the dictionary.
  • Gearing Down: Pull students needing extra assistance to the reading table and provide small group assistance. Go through the worksheet step by step with the group and ask questions to check their knowledge.
