32 Competencies

The 32 competencies, which are introduced, developed, and refined throughout the teacher preparation program, are formally assessed during student teaching.

I. Planning and Preparation

  1. Shows evidence of strong content area knowledge
  2. Thinks and teaches with interdisciplinary understanding
  3. Diagnoses learning needs accurately.
  4. Selects appropriate learning activities to meet both individual and group needs
  5. Uses resources beyond the text in a creative manner.
  6. Has a clear focus regarding long and short term goals.
  7. Demonstrates understanding of children and youth
  8. Utilizes a variety of assessment techniques and instruments to measure and evaluate student achievement.

II. The Classroom Environment

  1. Demonstrates a genuine excitement for teaching and learning
  2. Demonstrates respect for students
  3. Encourages and empowers students
  4. Encourages collaboration and group learning
  5. Organizes materials and the physical classroom effectively
  6. Anticipates situations that may lead to off task behavior
  7. Implements sequential intervention strategies for student misbehaviors
  8. Demonstrates a sense of self-confidence, poise, energy, enthusiasm and humor

III. Instruction

  1. Presents lessons in a creative, coherent, and pedagogically sound manner.
  2. Gives directions clearly.
  3. Utilizes multi-level questioning with students.
  4. Encourages student initiative and participation.
  5. Paces activities appropriately.
  6. Supports student learning through specific and timely feedback.
  7. Uses students' feedback to modify lessons.
  8. Demonstrates a willingness to experiment, improvise, and take risks.

IV. Professional Demeanor and Responsibilities

  1. Evaluates the content, materials, activities, methods, and procedures of lessons.
  2. Initiates personal and professional growth.
  3. Seeks, accepts and acts on evaluative comments.
  4. Demonstrates initiative in and out of the classroom.
  5. Interacts with sensitivity.
  6. Acts dependably, responsibly, and ethically.
  7. Works cooperatively with colleagues and administrators.
  8. Works effectively with parents.

V. Humanistic Dispositions

  • Values knowledge for its own sake was well as its practical applications.
  • Believes all children can learn and are naturally intelligent, artistic, and inquisitive.
  • Values and respects each student, respects human diversity, and shows a genuine affection for all students.
  • Values attitudes and behaviors which elevate respect for and promote the advancement of effective teaching and the teaching profession.
