Alums - Keep in Touch!

The Dimensions Program is extremely proud of the Cornell alumni providing leadership in healthcare throughout the country. The success of Dimensions hinges on the success of our graduates. We would like to connect with our alumni, and find out what we can do to better help our students.
Healthcare Alumna Profile
Carolyn P. Sauer graduated from Cornell in 1982 with a Psychology and Art double major. She received a Psy.D. from the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology. For the past 23 years, Dr. Sauer has been in solo practice in Placerville, California. She is also actively involved in the art community and is married with two boys, ages 11 and 13.
While attending Cornell College, Dr. Sauer was involved in synchronized swimming, played violin in Pirates of Penzance (Marcella Lee's class) and also played bassoon. She feels that Cornell prepared her for life because, "It forced me to learn good work habits, for example, avoid procrastinating. It also helped me learn to be flexible with regard to learning new skills and adaptation."
For current Cornell students interested in a career in psychology, Carolyn suggests, "Study many different things, even if you don't think it's going to be interesting. If you choose to practice clinical or counseling psychology a diverse background is an asset. Be sure to also build in hobbies and personal interests to keep yourself from burning out. If you choose to counsel people remember, if you wouldn't buy it you probably shouldn't be selling it." She also gives the following advice, "Clinical psychology is one of those fields where age and experience are assets. Spend some time working in a clinically related field, so you can learn about yourself."
