Emily Barbuto '00 teaches second grade at Seoul International School in Korea. Recently she published her novel, Instigating Profligacy: Aviva and Aisha’s Adventures in the World. The novel is a fictional comedy based loosely on Barbuto’s adventures and misadventures teaching, living, and touring overseas. “Mostly, it’s about culture shock,” says Barbuto. When asked for the meaning of Instigating Profligacy, she says, “The definition is in the second chapter and lots of Egyptian women are in prison for allegedly doing it.”

Akiko Miyake-Stoner '95 (second from left) was accepted into the Lutheran Volunteer Corps where she was placed for one year of volunteer service with ElderHealth NW, an adult day health center in Seattle. She is a case manager and leads art and cooking groups. “The Lutheran Volunteer Corps has three tenets: social justice, addressed in our work placements; community—I live in an intentional community with five other Lutheran volunteers; and simplicity—living a simple life in order to realize the privilege I have and to live in a way that is healthy and fair for the whole world,” she says.
