Pinning Down Facts

During the championship matches of the 2001 NCAA Division I wrestling tournament, the announcer offered the following trivia question: Who was the first school outside the state of Oklahoma to win the national collegiate championship? Answer: Cornell College, Iowa, 1947.

According to Richard Small ’50, who was in attendance: “The trivia would have been complete if the announcer had commented that the coach of the 1947 Cornell College championship team was attending at the age of 95. She also could have commented that Paul Scott ’29, at the age of 95, was the oldest coach, oldest wrestler, and also the oldest fan attending.”.
