It's a common story: Two Cornell freshmen meet and fall in love.
They break up at the end of the year and go their separate ways,
eventually marrying someone else and raising a family. But they
never forget that first love.
Such was the case for Jim Mansfield '49 and Elizabeth
Marshall Kirkman Mansfield '49-until the spring of 2001, when
Jim learned of the death of Elizabeth's husband and contacted her.
"It was not very long before they both realized that, despite
the 50-plus years' separation, the love of their youth was rekindled
and they decided to spend the rest of their lives together,"
they wrote to their friends at Christmas. They wed on Oct. 6 and
now live-appropriately enough-on Cornell Avenue in Iowa City, Iowa.
