What's The Deal?

Brent Brase '90 doing the unthinkable--coaching Kohawks.

We like to say that Cornell grads can do almost anything with their fine education. But Maryjo Huebner ’88 and Brent Brase ’90 have treaded where others dared not go. For 11 years, Huebner has recruited students for Coe College’s admissions office. Brase is the winningest coach in the history of men’s basketball at Coe.

How do they do it?

“It’s actually pretty easy because they’re two completely different places,” Huebner says of the rival schools. “The students are different, the curriculum is different, and the locations are so different. If a student loves Cornell, she’s probably not going to love Coe so much.” Ah, yes.

Most prospective Coe students never know that Huebner graduated from rival Cornell, though she nearly blew her cover once shortly after joining the staff. She answered the phone with a confident “Cornell admissions.” Fortunately it was a call from her friend, Jay Andersen ’89, who told her she needed to work on her phone skills.

Brase, head men’s basketball coach since 1994, recalls a transition period before he became completely comfortable coaching Kohawks. “The first couple of years I got a lot of ribbing and joking from my peers. The longer I’ve been here, the less people talk about me as being from Cornell.”
