When The Commons Information Desk posted a Web site ( recently, we discovered it offers a whole lot more than information. Available for check-out are jumper cables, 53 different board games, and outdoor sports equipment such as skis and lawn darts. Among the most popular items are equipment to play pool, foosball, and pingpong in the gameroom.

There is also the official lost and found box. This includes the usual hats, gloves, jewelry, and … “We had two pairs of shoes in the dead of winter. It makes me wonder,” says Carol Stock, Commons facility coordinator. “We’ve successfully returned somebody’s entire collection of CDs in a travel case. Someone else turned in $20 in cash. It amazes me more than anything else what people are honest enough to turn in.”

Yet information remains the overriding passion of the Info Desk. When a student called recently to inquire where to find swing-tap dance shoes, the staff researched and found an answer. Once in a while, though, expectations are too high. When a student asked staff to help solve his calculus problem, they had to admit they couldn’t offer an answer.
