In late August Cornell welcomed 410 new students, one of the three largest incoming classes in the college’s history and academically the strongest, with an average GPA of 3.53, 25 valedictorians, 28 percent in the top 10 percent of their class, and 56 percent in the top quarter . Move-in day was as grueling in 2003 as it was in the 1920s, with suitcases, bags, and boxes to haul along sidewalks and up stairs.
