President Les Garner added references to Cornell and Mount Vernon
during his debut with the Cedar
Rapids Symphony Orchestra last April narrating "The Young
Lutheran’s Guide to the Orchestra."
"Tonight’s performance is made possible by special arrangement
with Cornell College in Mount Vernon,” he began. Mount Vernon,
the little town that time forgot. Home to Bauman’s menswear,
where charge accounts are always open and a pair of 56-long overalls
is waiting or you. Also home of the Lincoln Cafe. Honest food, honest
prices. But no valet parking. If you can’t f ind a parking
space in Mount Vernon, you’re not looking. Mount Vernon, where
the women are strong, the  men
are good-looking, and the children are above average.”
Garrison Keillor wrote the script and commissioned Randall
Davidson ’75 to compose the music. Davidson, who spoke
at the Cedar Rapids performance and at an alumni pre-performance
reception, is one of a few modern composers to have written an orchestral
staple”—" The Young Lutheran’s Guide” has
received over 250 performances by such orchestras as the Chicago
Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic.
Garner is president of the Cedar Rapids Symphony Foundation and
past-president of the symphony’s board of directors.
