Faculty/Staff News
Don Cell, emeritus professor of economics and business,
taught his last course block 7, Economics of the Environment
and Conservation. At 70, he will now spend his time researching
how societies deal with solid waste and be engaged with a local
landfill issue. Last fall he took a People-To-People tour to China
with 16 other environmental professionals and four guests, including
his wife, Suki, where they exchanged expertise on air pollution
and solid waste with Chinese counterparts. While there, he and Suki
visited Falaq Kagda 88, Polina Wu Cheng Kamchee
94, and Francis Wu 74.
At the 2002 Riverside Theatre Shakespeare festival in Iowa City,
Ron Clark, theatre and communications studies artist-in-residence,
directed The Comedy of Errors and Mark Hunter, assistant
professor in theatre and communications studies, directed Romeo
& Juliet. The productions cast and crew included scenic
designer Scott Olinger, assistant professor in theatre and
communications studies; costume designer Lindsay Stang 98;
actors Jody Hovland, theatre and communications studies artist-in-residence,
and Andrew Birkestrand 02; and several curren t students.
Robert Dana, emeritus poet-in-residence, and Barbara
Lau, visiting faculty in English, were two of the six featured
poets at the Des Moines National Poetry Festival in May, where they
read from and discussed their work.
Helen Gray, accounts payable clerk, retired after early
23 years in the Business Office and the Office of Financial Assistance.
She looks forward to more time for travel with her husband, philosophy
professor Paul Gray.
Spanish professor Carol Lacy-Salazar received a 2002 Excellence
in Advising Award from the National Council of Mortar Board Inc.
As the advisor to the Torch chapter at Cornell, she was one of seven
advisors selected nationwide.
Associate professor of chemistry Cynthia Strong received
a $38,000 grant from the National Science Foundations Curriculum,
Course, and Laboratory Improvement program to purchase two instrumentsa
HPLC and a UV-Visible spectrophotometerfor chemistry experiments.
Jayne Swanson has returned to the Career Services Offices
as director. She was assistant to the director whe she left in 1998
after 16 years at Cornell to join the University of Iowa Career
Center.
