Communications Central

John Weber

Herb Hendriks '40 taught geology in Law Hall from 1947 to 1980.

Internet, e-mail, and telephone services are now located in Law Hall. Once, however, the building had just two phone lines to service faculty in three departments. At an open house held in Law Hall recently, Herb Hendriks ’40, emeritus professor of geology, recalled being a student and a faculty member in Law well before digital communications.

“When I retired in 1983, a young faculty member asked me what it was like way back in 1947 when I started to teach at Cornell. I told him we didn’t have phones in our offices, nor did we have copiers, computers, and voice mail. Expressing astonishment, he asked, ‘How did you communicate?’ I told him, ‘We talked to each other.’ ”
