Campus Digest: In Brief

Look who's talking about Cornell

Many students learn of Cornell through Loren Pope's "Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools That Will Change The Way You Think About College" and its companion, "Looking Beyond the Ivy League." In "Colleges That Change Lives," Pope wrote of Cornell: "In my book there is no better college, and it produces much more than its share of writers, scholars, and executives."

Other publications speak highly of Cornell, too.

This fall, the Fiske Guide to Colleges named Cornell one of the 25 Best Buy Schools among private colleges. The Best Buy Schools are based on the quality of academic offerings in relation to the cost of attendance and the quality of financial assistance.

The Huffington Post named Cornell one of the 13 most interesting colleges in its review of the Fiske Guide to Colleges for 2012. Cornell was one of only two Midwestern schools on the list..

Record enrollment

With an enrollment of 1,197 students, Cornell College set a record for the second year in a row. There are 385 new students, including transfer students, who came to Mount Vernon from 42 states and 10 foreign countries. Twenty-five percent are domestic students of color. Iowans make up 20 percent, while 17 percent come from Illinois. The rest of the top 10 are California, Colorado, Minnesota, Arizona, Wisconsin, Florida, Missouri, and Texas.

Driving on demand

No car? No problem, at least starting this year on campus. Cornell now has two cars available through the Hertz On Demand program. Students—or anyone, actually—can sign up on the Hertz website, and they'll get a packet that includes a swipe card.
They can then reserve a car online and use that swipe card to get into the vehicle. Rentals are available by the hour or by the day, and include gas and insurance.
Drivers 18 and over are able to use the service, said Tera Kringle, director of student activities, which especially benefits college students since rental car drivers typically must be 25 years old.
