Wallman Fellow in Art History
Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico
Santurce, Puerto Rico
Aims of the Fellowship
Rafael Tufiño was an American-born, Puerto Rican artist who experienced the effects of the Puerto Rican Diaspora. His mural La Plena, is a well-crafted and complex piece of artwork that has not been addressed in standard art historical texts. During my fellowship, I aim to understand the social significance of the mural by traveling to Puerto Rico to work at the museum where La Plena is currently housed, examine the local music and culture that may have inspired the painting, and use my findings to write my senior thesis and to contribute to the growing field of Latin American Art History.
