Domitian defeating a German

Ancient authors often include digressions on exotic lands, and the customs, religions and society of their inhabitants in longer historical narratives, such as Herodotus' discussion of Egypt in his History or Caesar's description of Gaul.  Tacitus follows in this tradition in his Germania and offers an account of German burial customs, military practices, marriage, and blood-feuds among other topics in an entire work focused on the inhabitants of ancient Germany in the first century CE.  In this course we will read the text of the Germania and discuss matters of grammar, literary style, the ancient ethnographic tradition and historical method.
