“Lunch Buddies provides a great opportunity to get off of the campus and have some fun with someone who really appreciates you,” says Becca Swartz (above), a Lunch Buddy for three years.
Lunch Buddies
Lunch Buddies connects Cornell students with 3rd and 4th graders from Mount Vernon's Washington Elementary School. Cornell students join their buddies for lunch and recess two to three times a month and participate in various programs off campus. The purpose of the program is to provide positive role models for the children of Mount Vernon, make a difference in the local community, and have fun!
Applications for Lunch Buddies for 2011-2012 are now available. To apply, fill out the online application form here, and the Lunch Buddies contract here.

Aside from weekly visits to Washington Elementary, Lunch Buddies are provided with several opportunities to interact with their buddies outside of school. For example:
- A Lunch Buddies Kick-Off on the Orange Carpet and a haunted house/Halloween party in October
- An invitation to attend Cornell basketball games and participate in halftime games
- Reverse Lunch Buddies Day in May when elementary students join Cornell students for lunch in Sodexo
