Computing Facilities and Services
Campus computing facilities include microcomputers, work-stations, central computers, and a direct connection to the Internet.
There are clusters and labs of microcomputers, both Mac and PCs, available to all students for word processing and other course-related work. These are located in Armstrong Hall, Cole Library, The Commons, Law Hall, the Learning Skills Center, Norton Geology Center, and West Science Center.
Academic central computing facilities are provided by a Digital Equipment Corporation AlphaServer 2100, which we call Athena. This RISC-based system was purchased in 1994. Athena access is available from every academic building and via the telephone with a modem. Free Athena accounts are automatically created for every student; account information is distributed during New Student Orientation. Software and services available on this machine include Internet services - electronic mail, Web browsing (lynx), gopher, conferencing, file transfer (Kermit, FTP), talk, and telnet - as well as statistics software (Minitab, SPSS) and programming languages (C, C++, FORTRAN, Pascal).
Ten Hewlett-Packard/Apollo networked graphics workstations are available in a student laboratory in Law Hall. These systems run under the Unix operating system and X-windows. The network offers full-range language capability (Ada, C, C++, Lisp, Pascal, etc.), Mathematica, extensive graphics software, Web browsers, electronic darkroom software, laser and color printing, and a variety of special applications. Free HP/Apollo accounts are available on request - forms are available in the lab and at the Academic Computing Office.
Since 1991, Cornell has been connected to the Internet. Through this connection, students, faculty, and staff are able to access resources such as research libraries, data files, and software, sounds, and images. We are also able to communicate with friends and professional colleagues world-wide. Internet resources can be accessed from any machine directly on the campus network (including labs in Cole Library, Law Hall, Norton Geology, and West Science) or any machine connected to Athena. Since 1993, Cornell has maintained a campus site on the World Wide Web.
The URL for this site is http://www.cornellcollege.edu/
The Academic Computing Department, located in Prall House, is responsible for hardware and software support for the academic network, central systems, faculty microcomputers, and student labs. The College employs approximately 60 student assistants to provide hardware and software support and answer questions and solve problems in computer labs. Details on lab hours and facilities, as well as a 24-hour electronic help desk, are easily accessible on Cornell's World Wide Web site. In addition to regular Cornell courses, workshops to teach interested students how to use the available software are offered regularly.
Apple Macintosh computers, Hewlett-packard printers, and a variety of software for personal purchase are available at substantial educational discounts through the Bookstore. Academic Computing personnel are available to consult with interested buyers.
Administrative Computing, a separate network, uses an IBM AS/400 through a TEAMS2000 software system serviced by CMDS, Inc. and installed in August 1995. The latest upgrade took place in January 1996.
