Chicago Semester in the Arts (4) The Chicago Semester in the Arts program provides an intensive exposure to the dynamic arts scene of a major American city. In addition to attending a range of cultural events, students interact with Chicago's artists through an interdisciplinary core course, a special topic seminar, and an internship. The internship may be with a theatre, dance company, gallery, orchestra, publishing firm, arts service organization, or an individual artist. Dimensions of Multiculture and Global Awareness (1) This one-month ACM course in Chicago explores the meaning of cultural identification and its impact on children's learning. The course serves candidates for bilingual certification, international students wanting to develop a deeper understanding of American cities, and a broad range of students interested in expanding their understanding of other cultures. Newberry Library Program in the Humanities (4) One of America's great research libraries provides the setting and resources for this program. Students attend seminars, meet with resident scholars, and conduct their own research on selected topics using the Newberry Library's outstanding collection of more than a million volumes and four million manuscripts. Oak Ridge Science Semester (4) This ACM semester program is designed to allow qualified undergraduates to study and conduct research at the frontiers of current knowledge in a prestigious and challenging scientific environment. As members of a research team, students engage in long-range intensive investigations utilizing the facilities of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) located near Knoxville, Tennessee. Participants spend most of their time in research with a mentor specializing in biology, engineering, mathematics, or the physical or social sciences. Students also participate in an interdisciplinary seminar designed to broaden exposure to innovations in related disciplines as well as in the major field. In addition, each student chooses one elective from among a variety of advanced courses. The academic program is enriched in informal ways by guest speakers, departmental colloquia, and the special interests and expertise of the ORNL staff. Teaching Foreign Languages in Elementary School (1) This one-month ACM course examines the materials, techniques, and psychological basis for teaching a new language to children in grades K-6. January. CONNELL [974]
Urban Education (4) This ACM program in Chicago offers student teaching internships, a summer program leading to certification in bilingual or English as a Second Language education, and one-month courses in December and January on cultural awareness and language teaching in elementary schools. All courses provide intensive field experience supervised by master teachers. The program supports student teachers through a series of workshops, seminars, discussion groups, and individual mentoring. Emphasis is placed on developing each student's strengths and expanding her or his repertoire of teaching stragegies.
Because of its location in Chicago, the program allows students to experience a rich variety of instructional settings; students can choose placements in inner city, suburban, traditional, innovative, bilingual and special education. One goal of the program is to expose all students to the diversity of Chicago's ethnic communities.
The January and December course, ``Dimensions of Multiculture,'' explores the meaning of cultural identification and its impact on children's learning. Program graduates are well-qualified to address some of the serious educational issues in urban schools. Prerequisite: permission of the chair of the Cornell Education Department; and for those intending to do student teaching, a grade point average of at least 2.7. Urban Studies (4) The social, cultural, and economic forces that shape American cities such as urban renewal, political machines, youth movements, pollution, the daily press, welfare, high culture and mass culture, the corporate elite are all present in Chicago. This ACM program is designed to heighten the participants' understanding of the magnitude and complexity of an urban center by studying, working, and living in Chicago. There are formal seminars on urban issues, a core course focusing on current problems in public policy, independent study projects, and supervised internships that help students gain a valuable understanding of the city and a clearer sense of their own values and goals. Washington Center/Capital Experience (4) These highly flexible programs offer both internships and courses in our nation's capital. Programs can be designed to accommodate the interests of most students and range from art to women's studies. Both programs are non-profit institutions devoted to organizing and supervising programs in the Washington, D.C., area. They arrange placements tailored to the specific interests of individual students, supplemental seminars on politics and policy, student housing, and other student services. Opportunities include two 15-week semesters, an eleven-week quarter, and a ten-week summer session, plus short-term academic seminars of varying lengths. R. SUTHERLAND [981]
Wilderness Field Station (2) The ACM Wilderness Field Station is located on remote Low Lake in the Superior National Forest just outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota. The program offers an exceptional opportunity for direct observation of northwoods organisms and habitats. There are courses in ecology, wetlands biology, conservation biology, ornithology, animal behavior, and behavioral ecology of mammals as well as independent study options. In addition, courses such as environmental ethics, Ojibway literature and culture, and field biology are offered for non-science majors. Much of the field work in this program is done on canoe trips, involving paddling, portaging, and camping. The base camp's well-equipped laboratories and herbarium enable students to supplement their field study with modern analytical techniques. There are no prerequisites for environmental ethics, Ojibway literature and culture, and field biology. For all other courses the prerequisite is one college biology course or its equivalent.
