Communications Studies (COM)

 

121. Speech Communication
Group discussion, role playing, impromptu and planned speeches, nonverbal behavior, all as part of the communicative process.

228. Leadership
Famous leaders and research in leadership. Some experience in small group leadership. Offered subject to availability of staff.

235. Oral Interpretation
Emphasis on the meaningful oral reading of poetry, prose, and drama, after careful study and analysis of the literature selected. Some group projects in interpretation may be developed.

241. Women and Communication
Examination of the communication styles of both women and men historically and in the present day. Coursework addresses verbal and non-verbal behavior and interpretation, as well as small and large group interaction.

251. Organizational Communication
Studies and addresses of communication behaviors and strategies in the organizational context. Coursework will examine both formal and informal environments, structural impact on communication strategies, and concepts for creating a communicative environment.

323. Media, Politics, People
Television, radio, newspapers, and magazines as creators or reflectors of attitudes and values. Politics and mass media. Prerequisite: COM 121.

326. Argumentation and Debate
Principles of argumentation and styles of debate. Students develop and present well reasoned arguments on a variety of topics. Prerequisite: COM 121. Alternate years.
