Refunds

To qualify for a refund a student must formally withdraw or be granted an emergency leave of absence from the College by the Dean of Students. Full settlement of accounts is due before a transcript will be issued. Cornell College engages its faculty and staff and assigns residence hall space in advance of each semester. When students withdraw prior to the end of a semester, vacancies remain which cannot be filled.

An officially approved leave of absence for medical reasons as determined by the Dean of Students will result in charges being adjusted on a pro rata basis.

An officially approved withdrawal or leave of absence for counseling and other reasons will follow the following schedule of refunds:

No. of Weeks Percentage of Percentage of

Elapsed in Tuition Residence

Dining charges will be refunded on a pro rata basis from one week following the date of the withdrawal or leave.

A more restrictive refund policy governs withdrawals from off-campus programs. Consult the program director. For refund purposes a semester is defined here as Terms 1-4 (September - December) and Terms 5-8 (January - April) consisting of 16 weeks each.

Federal regulations require that refunds for first semester first year students only be made on a pro rata basis. Consult the Office of Financial Assistance for further information.

Students receiving financial assistance will receive a similar reduction in their total financial aid package. Refunds follow the federally mandated refund hierarchy as follows:

Federal loans in this order: SLS, Unsubsidized Stafford, Subsidized Stafford, PLUS, Unsubsidized Direct, Subsidized Direct, Direct PLUS, Perkins; then Federal Pell grant, Federal SEOG grant and then other Title IV aid. Aid provided from other sources will be refunded on a basis proportional to the total.

Full refund of the Enrollment and Accounts Receivable deposit will be given upon written notice of 90 days to the Dean of Students. Those students on a deferred payment plan may have additional payments to make. The College reserves the right to exclude at any time students whose conduct makes them undesirable members of the Cornell community.
