Student Life and ResourcesStudent life at Cornell complements the academic program and provides a feeling of community at the College. Students participate actively in the governance of the College, serving on committees, on the Student Senate, and on the Performing Arts and Activities Council. Cornell's approach to student life encompasses the expectation that students are capable of mature and responsible behavior. Within any community, certain responsibilities protect the safety and health of the community as a whole. The ``Statement of Rights and Freedoms of Students at Cornell College'' and the College's judicial procedures outline the standards for the institution's educational purposes and the rights and responsibilities of individuals in the academic community. Although the College has its own judicial system, Cornell respects the law and its authority and will not shelter students who violate civil or local laws. In some circumstances, where violation of public law is considered of significant magnitude or counter to the College's own expectations, the College may also take independent action in accordance with its published guidelines. Each summer, the College publishes the student handbook, called The Compass , which contains chapters on college services; residence halls; student finances; college policies; campus organizations, activities, and constitutions; academic guidelines; and rights and responsibilities. A copy is given to every new student and may also be obtained from the Office of Student Affairs.
