Larvae of certain moths, like the Io moth, have stinging hairs that are connected to poison glands. The sensation felt when pricked by one of these hairs is similar to that of a bee sting. The area pricked can swell, become red, itch or burn and sometimes the poison causes nausea. Stinging catapillars are usually found in the late summer to early autmn on trees, plants and shrubs . |
