Xylocopa virginica is the scientific name for the carpenter bee. Female Carpenter bees make their nests in wood. They build little nest tunnels right into the wood. It is a common misconception that all bees can sting. This is not true. The male Carpenter bee is not equipped with a stinger. They are very aggressive around the nests though. They spend their lives searching for female Carpenter bees to mate with.
