Red Bug Myth: Red Bugs are known to drink the blood of humans.
Also known as chiggers, these are not bugs, but the larval stage of mites. Chiggers do not drink your blood as commonly believed. They inject digestive saliva that liquifies the skin cells and these cells are what they eat. This is the meal that these creatures need to become adults. If they don't get enough, and are brushed off by the human they lose their mouthparts, will not be able to feed again, and will soon die. Some chiggers, not in North America, can carry diseases such as typhus and lyme disease.
