The Damselfly spends its larval stage as a nymph. An old name for damselflies was 'Devil's Darning Needles'. This stems from an old myth that if you went to sleep by a stream on a summer's day, damselflies would use their long, thin bodies to sew your eyelids shut!

Nymphs of Damselflies are found near the weedy coastlines of still waters. Through worm-like wiggling, they can swim slowly, but usually they grab hold of stems of weeds and look for prey. In the nymph stage, Damselflies are often eaten by fish. When they reach maturity, damselfly nymphs migrate in large numbers to above-water objects, to prepare for hatching.
