Insect ABC's

Back toAnabel and Caroline

STDs occur in the insect world in the form of a sexually transmitted bacterium called Wolbachia. Infection benefits females by giving them higher fitness, but in exchange they are only able to successfully mate with other wolbachia infected individuals. However, the bacterium prefers females’s egg cells as a host. This makes finding a surviving Wolbachia infected male more difficult. In some species Wolbachia infection of females leads to parthogenesis, which means, the ability to give birth virginally or asexually. This leaves males superfluous.Source: /pages/sn_arch/11_16_96/bob1.htm
