Insect ABC's

Back toAnabel and Caroline

The jewel beetles of Australia are known for their beautiful colors and patterns. The amorous insects are also known for falling prey to an interesting case of mistaken identity. Apparently, the male jewel beetle mistakes discarded "stubbies" or beer bottles for enourmous and nublile females. The curves of the bottle and its opening are reminicent of a female's elytra, or hindwings (to a male jewel beetle at least.) The males mount the bottle and attempt to sexually copulate with it through the bottle opening. Source: newsItems/viewDepartment$Creature%20Features
