The sand fly is the vector of a very fatal tropical disease known as Bartonellosis. This disease is also commonly called Oroya Fever and is also called Carrion's disease after a medical student who died researching the disease. Daniel Carrion infected himself with spores from a lesion caused by the disease to show that it was the same form of the disease as the acute version. |
