Oswald T. Avery was one of the great microbiologists of his time. The phenomenon of transformation, discovered by Griffiths in the 1920s, was finally explained in his laboratory in the 1930s and 40s, with the work of MacLeod and McCarty. Their work was the first clear demonstration that the genetic material was DNA and not protein. | ||
