K-12 Administration Office, Hillsboro, OR
(Summer 2008)
In June of 2008, Katie Gieszler interned at the K-12 Administration Office in Hillsboro, OR. Gieszler worked specifically in the Business Office, Payroll Department. The district educates more than 22,000 students at 33 different locations and they are in the process of implementing a new finance system and accounting program. During the internship, Gieszler did projects involving employee accounts, extended contract payments, and overseeing accounting reports before checks were distributed.
Gieszler found that "one of the challenging aspects of this internship was to find the correct account numbers to input so that each contract could be paid out of the right section of the budget. Working in a business office full time enabled me to envision what it would be like in the future, if this is the field I choose to pursue. Throughout the month of working in the payroll department, I realized that I truly do have a passion for numbers and finance related projects."
"Cornell College has prepared me well for this internship. I believe taking financial accounting and statistics enabled me to understand the projects that I was asked to complete, as well as helping me recognize some of the financial statements that are used in the real world. I think the One Course At A Time style of teaching has given me the ability to learn quickly and efficiently and to pay attention to detail with all of the duties I performed daily. I feel that Cornell coursework and the internship completed this summer will prepare me for a successful experience in a graduate school program."
