Extraordinary Internship
Student Highlight
Katie Gieszler '10 recently completed an internship with the Economic Development department of the State of Iowa in Des Moines. Her main project was to study the economic impact of the Main Street Iowa program. Under this program federal funds are distributed to revitalize small businesses of historic significance in Iowa communities. Katie completed case studies of projects in four Iowa communities. She visited the project sites, and interviewed business owners to understand the renovation process and the economic impact of the development grants.
Says Gieszler, "The internship allowed me to see how a small amount of grant money can really make a difference at the local level, leading to job creation and revenue increases for surrounding businesses. By developing and using an economic impact model, I was able to gather concrete data and quantify the benefits that were created with the challenge grants."
