Campaign for Cornell College

Student Perspective

I'm interested in anything that presents an alternative and more beneficent social or economic paradigm, and Mr. Korslund's sustainable banking seems like a hopeful alternative to more conventional banking which seems more focused on short-term profit than people or the planet. I also understood his talk to be in part describing yet another tool in the set available for creating sustainable development, the knowledge of which seems important in the goal of a more equitable and humane global social order. -- Joe Harrity '11

David Korslund '76 was on campus on March 15th making a presentation in Professor Dave Burgess's ECB: 271 Entrepreneurship course. He spoke about the developing industry of microfinance and sustainable banking in relation to social entrepreneurship. He also conducted a workshop entitled Sustainable Banking: Values Based Banking Supporting Social Entrepreneurship with students. During the workshop, he compared the goals and mission of traditional banking with those of sustainable banking. He shared the core values of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values, which include:

  • Using money as a tool for enhancing the quality of life through human, social, cultural and environmental development,
  • Responsibility for the long term impact of our efforts on our interdependent environment and communities, and
  • Transparency, trust, clarity, and inclusiveness in delivering our products and services.

Students were very engaged in his presentation, asking many questions about those values and the path his career has taken since graduating from Cornell College in 1976.

Korslund is a senior advisor for the Global Alliance for Banking on Values, which is a group of banks that use finance to build a more sustainable future for the environment and underserved people and sectors. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Shore Bank and has served as an Executive Vice President at ABN AMRO Bank in The Netherlands. Prior to that, he held leadership positions with several other banks in the United States. He received a MBA in Finance and Accounting from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
