Campaign for Cornell College

Cillian Ryan

Ryan is an associate professor of economics at the University of Birmingham (England) and holds the Jean Monnet Chair in European Economics. He leads the European Research Institute and is director of the Birmingham Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence.

During his January 2007 visit to Cornell, Ryan gave a lecture on European and U.S. agriculture policies and their implications for international trade agreements. He also spent three hours with students in A’amer Farooqi’s International Economics seminar over the course of two days.

The students heard Ryan’s first-hand perspective on the European Union, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the World Trade Organization. They also discussed the implications of such international trade agreements for the US generally and for the students in particular.

“Our students got to speak with an expert in the field who has interacted with important European policy makers,” says Farooqi. “They also got to hear a European perspective on global issues.”
