MOUNT VERNON — Senior Chris Heilman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) has been named the Iowa Conference’s Wrestler of the Week for the period ending Nov. 11.

Heilman captured the 125-pound title in the gold division at the Pointer Open Nov. 10 in Stevens Point, Wis. He went 4-0 and allowed only five points in the tournament. Heilman recorded a technical fall over Indianapolis’ Josh Allen (18-0) and major decisions over North Central’s Joe Norton (12-0) and UW-Parkside’s Brandon Kirchner (11-1) before beating Upper Iowa’s Tyler Mumbulo (11-4) in the final. All of his opponents except Norton wrestle for Division II schools, including sixth-ranked Mumbulo.

Heilman, a two-time All-American who placed fourth at the 2007 NCAA Division III Championships, is ranked second in the NWCA preseason poll. He raised his career record to 98-27. Heilman ranks fifth in Cornell modern-day history with a 78.4 career winning percentage.

Heilman helped lead the 11th-ranked Rams to a third-place finish at the Pointer Open with 191 points. He was one of five Rams that placed in the gold division.

Cornell will have split squads competing Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Turkey Open in Cedar Rapids and the Auggie Open in Augsburg, Minn.

Heilman, a 2004 graduate of St. Mary’s High School, is the son of Donna and Wayne Heilman, Colorado Springs, Colo.
