Coming up — Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Luther, Decorah, 6 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 30, Elmhurst, Small Multi-Sport Center, Mount Vernon, 7 p.m.; Monday, Dec. 3, Mount Mercy, Small Multi-Sport Center, Mount Vernon, 7 p.m.

Ram review – Cornell (0-2) had its work cut on its first road trip of the season, falling 85-48 to 24th-ranked and undefeated UW-Whitewater Nov. 25 in Whitewater, Wis.

“It was very much a learning experience for our team,” said Cornell coach Brent Brase, who has no seniors and only five upperclassmen on his squad. “UW-Whitewater is a very, very good team and exposed any weaknesses we have. Some of those we cannot change, like size, but many of which can be corrected. It was great to play a team this talented early in the season because it clearly identifies what we need to do better.

“Defensively, we need to become much tougher in the half court. Offensively, we need to play quick and fast without being in a hurry. As we learn to cut harder, move the ball quicker and not settle for shots, our offense will improve.”

Freshmen Alicia West (Plymouth, Wis./ Plymouth) and Melanie Duplessis (Lindenhurst, Ill./ Warren Township) both reached double figures in points for the second straight game to lead the Rams. West tossed in a team-high 13 points and went 5-of-6 from the field with a pair of 3-point goals. Duplessis chipped in 11 points.

The Rams trailed 41-22 at halftime and were held to 29.5 shooting (18-of-61) for the game. UW-Whitewater (3-0) shot 50 percent from the field (31-of-62) and owned a 50-36 edge in rebounds.

Another ranked foe next – Cornell takes on its second nationally-ranked opponent in four days when it visits ninth-ranked Luther Nov. 28 in the Iowa Conference opener in Decorah. Luther is the defending IIAC champion and a 2007 national tournament qualifier.

“Luther is close to the same level as UW-Whitewater,” Brase said. “They are very long and athletic with a couple of very good post players.”

Home stretch – Following the game at Luther, the Rams return to Mount Vernon for their longest home stretch of the season. Cornell is home for four consecutive nonconference games against Elmhurst Nov. 30, Mount Mercy Dec. 3, Mount Mary Dec. 7 and Silver Lake Dec. 8.
