MOUNT VERNON –Cornell’s Tiffany Cowan (Independence, Mo./Truman) and Melanie Duplessis (Lindenhurst, Ill./Warren Township) have been named to the all-Iowa Conference honorable mention women’s basketball team, released Wednesday.

Cowan, a 5-foot-10 junior forward, led the Rams in rebounds (7.1 rpg) and free throw percentage (90.2) and was second on the team in scoring (12.1 ppg) and steals (2.0). She ranked fifth in the IIAC in steals, sixth in offensive rebounds (2.35 pg), seventh in defensive rebounds (4.7 pg) and eighth in total rebounds.

Cowan, who missed five games at the end of the season because of an injury, shot 37.6 percent from the field (89-of-237) and 31.8 percent from 3-point range (27-of-85). She moved into second place on Cornell’s career list for made 3-point goals with 90, just 11 shy of the all-time mark held by Bindy Comito (1999-2002). Cowan ranks third at Cornell in career steals (145), third in career rebounds (541) and seventh in career points (800).

Duplessis, a 5-6 freshman guard, averaged a team-high 13.8 points per game, tops among all freshmen in the league. She posted the highest single-season scoring average by a Ram since Lisa Fry (14.1 ppg) in 2001-02. Duplessis notched five 20-point games and reached double figures in 18 of 25 contests.

Duplessis averaged 3.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.4 steals. She shot 38.1 percent from the floor (138-of-362), 74.6 percent from the foul line (50-of-67) and 31.7 percent from beyond the arc (20-of-63). Duplessis ranked seventh in the conference in scoring and eighth in free throw percentage.

The Rams, who did not feature a senior on their roster, finished the 2007-08 season 8-17 overall and placed eighth in the IIAC with a 3-13 mark under third-year head coach Brent Brase.

Simpson’s Katelyn Whiton was named the IIAC’s Most Valuable Player and Simpson’s Brian Niemuth Coach of the Year after leading the nationally-ranked Storm to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. IIAC first team selections included Simpson’s Ashley Katch and Whitney Franker, Loras’ Lindsay Bava and Natalie Pucci, Luther’s Ashley TeKippe, Coe’s Amber Karkosh and Buena Vista’s Margo Muhlbauer.
