Rams finish 1-1 at Sal Vaccaro Tournament

Coming up - Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Ashford, Clinton, 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 26, at Coe, Cedar Rapids, 1 p.m.; Sunday, Sept. 27, at Knox, Galesburg, Ill., 1 p.m.

Ram rewind - Cornell began a five-match road trip with a split in two contests at the Sal Vaccaro Tournament Saturday and Sunday, hosted by North Central in Naperville, Ill.

The Rams (3-2) were shut out for the first time this fall, 2-0 to Mount Mercy's in Saturday's first-round match. Cornell came back with a 2-1 consolation win Sunday over Eureka.

"We wanted to make up for a frustrating day Saturday and we felt like we did that Sunday," Cornell head coach Derek Bell said. "It was good to get the win."

Cornell rallied from an early 1-0 deficit against Eureka. Junior Kelli Ford (Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes) tied the score at the 28-minute mark on an assist from Jen Swotek (Council Bluffs/Thomas Jefferson). The winning goal came with 30 seconds left in the first half when sophomore forward Rachel Wynn (Colorado Springs, Colo./Coronado) punched in a pass from Adrianna Montellano (Bakersfield, Calif./Sky View Academy).

The Rams dominated Eureka statistically with a 23-5 shot advantage. Freshman goalkeeper Jenn Barbo (Carversville, Pa./Solebury School) improved her season record to 2-0 with a complete-game victory. She finished with three saves, allowing the lone goal on a penalty kick.

Cornell, which beat Mount Mercy 2-1 in the season opener, was not as fortunate in the teams' second meeting of the month. The Mustangs struck for two goals in a span of eight seconds late in the first half for the game's only scoring.

Dana Banks (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet) had four saves in the first half. Barbo took over at keeper after intermission and held the Mustangs scoreless while posting two saves. Mount Mercy outshot the Rams, 16-11.

Rams in the rankings - Barbo ranks fourth in the Iowa Conference with 1.05 goals against per match. She has allowed just three goals in 258 minutes. Ford is fourth in the league in goals per match (0.60). She leads the Rams with three goals this fall.
