Rams sweep St. Ambrose, run win streak to four games

Ram review – The Rams (6-4) ran their winning streak to four games with a 6-3, 2-1 doubleheader sweep at NAIA St. Ambrose March 15 in Davenport.

Sophomore pitcher Ashton Horn (Davenport/West) tossed a pair of victories and Jessica Mauser (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake) tallied five hits for the upstart Rams, who did not record their sixth win last season until April 18.

Horn (6-3) gave up four hits and one earned run over 6 2/3 innings in the opener. She fanned five and walked two.

Mauser led Cornell’s 11-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Nicole Duncan (Wilton/Wilton) and Sara Blaser (Davenport/North) each had two hits and Kim Cox (Calhan, Colo./Ellicott) drove in a pair of runs.

Cornell scored twice in the first inning and added three more in the second to take a 5-2 lead. Duncan and Mauser both had run-scoring doubles in the second. Mallory Kowal (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) drove in Cornell’s final run in the seventh.

In the nightcap, Blaser doubled home what proved to be the game-winning run with a two-out double in the top of the sixth. St. Ambrose cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, but Horn held strong on the mound for her second win of the day.

Horn fired seven innings of four-hit ball and did not surrender and earned run. She finished with six strikeouts and one walk. Mauser went 2-for-3 at the plate. Duncan and Simone Wright (Zion, Ill./Waukegan) each scored a run.

Team leaders – Blaser leads the Rams with a .382 batting average, five doubles, 12 RBIs and a current five-game hitting streak. Duncan and Mauser are hitting .324 and .323, respectively. Duncan and Laurel Wilhelm (Blairstown/Benton) are tied for the team lead with 10 runs scored.

Horn is 6-3 on the mound with 40 strikeouts, 15 walks and a 2.59 earned run average. She has thrown five complete games in nine starts.
