Cornell concludes Texas trip with two convincing wins

Ram review – Cornell (4-4 overall, 0-0 Iowa Conference) capped a six-game trip in Texas with a pair of resounding wins – 9-1 over University of Dallas and 9-2 over College of St. Scholastica – on its final day of competition March 2 in Irving, Texas.
The Rams dropped four games in the LeTourneau Spring Classic in Longview, Texas. Cornell fell 6-1 to Concordia (Texas) and 12-1 to Texas-Tyler on Feb. 29, followed by a 7-6 loss to LeTourneau and a 5-2 setback to Howard Payne on March 1.
Junior Sara Blaser (Davenport/North) paced Cornell’s hitting attack, going 7-for-19 with three doubles and eight runs batted in during the trip. She went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs in the win over St. Scholastica and added two hits and two RBIs against Dallas.
Senior second baseman Lisa Anderson (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) finished with four doubles, four RBIs and a team-high .529 slugging percentage. Laurel Wilhelm (Blairstown/Benton) and Jessica Mauser (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake) led the Rams with five runs scored apiece. Wilhelm had six hits and stole three bases.
Sophomore pitcher Ashton Horn (Davenport/West) went 2-3 on the mound with a 3.90 earned run average. She recorded 21 strikeouts and 11 walks in 32.1 innings. Horn tossed a complete-game victory over Dallas and combined with Kimberly Traylor (Lee’s Summitt, Mo./North) on a three-hitter against St. Scholastica.
The Rams let one slip away in a 7-6 loss to host LeTourneau, which rallied for three unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Cornell also carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth in the loss to Howard Payne.
Nicole Duncan and Blaser each went 2-for-4 against Dallas. The Rams got two RBIs apiece from Blaser, Anderson and Kim Cox (Calhan, Colo./Ellicott). Eight Rams collected a hit in the win over St. Scholastica, highlighted by multiple-hit games from Blaser, Cox, Anderson and Wilhelm.
Team leaders – Through eight games, freshman Katelyn Tomasik (Chicago, Ill./Marist) leads the Rams with a .375 batting average, followed by Blaser at .370. Blaser has a team-high 11 RBIs and .519 slugging percentage. Wilhelm has scored 10 runs. Horn is 4-3 on the mound with a 3.18 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 45.1 innings.
