Men's Basketball News ReleasesAccess the News Release archive MOUNT VERNON — The Cornell College men’s basketball team will spend its ninth academic block overseas in a tour of Greece May 12-23 for an educational, cultural and basketball experience provided by the college’s distinctive academic calendar – One-Course-At-A-time. The 12-day trip will feature sightseeing and guided city tours, a cruise to the Greek Islands and three Cornell basketball games. Cornell’s travel party of 40 includes 18 players, in addition to coaches, family and friends. “The experiences this trip to Greece will provide will be remembered by our players for the rest of their lives,” Cornell head men’s basketball coach Mike DeGeorge said. “We want to make this a complete experience. Beyond the additional practice and game experience, we want this to be an educational and cultural experience. This trip will play an important role to our success in 2008-09.” The Rams have games scheduled May 14 against Illisiakos Basketball Club at the Zografou Stadium, May 15 against Near East Basketball Club at the Kesariani Stadium and May 21 against Kalamata Basketball Club at the Municipal Stadium of Kalamata. “We’ll play three games against quality international competition,” DeGeorge said. “This trip will serve as a tremendous test for our team. We will have to overcome the travel and differences in language, food and rules.” Players on the team are enrolled in a group study for the credited class The History of Greek Athletics Kinesiology 256, taught by Cornell professor Ellen Whale. The student-athletes will give presentations about the origin of modern sports and learn first-hand the ancient ruins while they compete against descendants of these original participants. Gifts in kind are welcome to support the players’ expenses for the trip. For more information, contact coach DeGeorge at mdegeorge@cornellcollege.edu or 319-895-4268.
