Ram review - Cornell sent seven wrestlers to the finals and crowned four champions at the Coe College Turkey Open Saturday in Cedar Rapids. No team scores were recorded.

The Rams (1-0) opened dual competition Nov. 19 with a 35-10 Iowa Conference victory over Simpson at the Small Multi-Sport Center in Mount Vernon.

Cornell picked up Turkey Open titles from sophomore Micky Spiwak (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) at 125 pounds, sophomore Kevin Donahue (Mechanicsville, Va./St. Christopher's) at 141, sophomore Ryan Mulnix (Coggon/North-Linn) at 149 and senior Kyle Kehrli (Winthrop/East Buchanan) at 174.

"Any time you have seven guys in the finals, you have an overall good feeling of the team performance," Cornell head coach Mike Duroe said. "But we definitely have a lot of room for improvement.

"I thought Spiwak, Mulnix and Kehrli all dominated their weight classes. I was really pleased with their performances. They wrestled aggressively and with a lot of intensity."

The Rams had three runner-up finishers in senior Dave Paramski (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) at 157, senior Carmen Sacco (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) at 184 and sophomore Robert Widmer (Malcom/Montezuma) at 197.

Kehrli dominated his competition during a perfect 5-0 week, posting three first-period pins and two major decisions. He rolled to a 13-2 victory over Wheaton's eighth-ranked Toby Boltz in the championship match.

Donahue sported a 5-0 record on the week with two major decisions and a pin. Spiwak and Mulnix each finished 4-0. Mulnix was impressive with three pins in four matches at the Turkey Open, including a fall in 2 minutes, 54 seconds in the finals.

Paramski finished 4-1 with three major decisions and a technical fall. His lone blemish was a fall against NAIA's top-ranked Matt Collum of Missouri Baptist in the 157-pound final. Sacco and Widmer each went 3-1. Widmer had a pair of pins.

Cornell won eight of the nine contested matches in the home opener with Simpson. The Rams received pins from freshman Tigue Snider (Wilton/Wilton) at 133 and Kehrli. Paramski scored a technical fall while Spiwak, Donahue and freshman Joe Hambleton (Parsons, Kan./Labette County) all recorded major decisions.

Rams in the rankings - Cornell dropped one spot to No. 12 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Poll, released Nov. 19. Seven of the nine IIAC schools are ranked in the top 30, including No. 1 Wartburg, No. 4 Coe, No. 9 Luther, No. 12 Cornell, No. 18 Dubuque, No. 19 Loras and No. 23 Buena Vista.

The Rams have two nationally-rated individuals in Nick Nothern (Salina, Kan./Salina South) and Kehrli. Nothern slipped two places to No. 4 at 133. Kehrli fell four spots to No. 6 at 174.

Tough month ahead - The Rams will face several nationally-ranked teams and individuals during a tough stretch from Dec. 6-16.

Cornell meets No. 5 UW-La Crosse and No. 7 St. John's at the UW-La Crosse Duals Dec. 6, followed by a home dual with NAIA's No. 11 William Penn Dec. 9. The Rams compete in the Dick Walker Invitational, hosted by top-ranked Wartburg, on Dec. 13 and concludes the stretch at No. 8 North Central Dec. 16.

"In the month of December, we will face very tough competition in a short time," Duroe said. "This week off from competition will be good for us in terms of training, recovery and preparation. We will focus on individual technical areas."
