Wohrley makes first national appearance as eighth seed in Friday's pentathlon

Coming up - Cornell College senior James Wohrley (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) will compete in the men's pentathlon at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend, hosted by DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.

James WohrleyThe men's pentathlon kicks off the two-day meet with all five events scheduled Friday. The competition begins at 8 a.m. (Iowa time) with the 55-meter hurdles, followed by the long jump, shot put, high jump and 1000 run. The pentathlon events begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the previous event.

Wohrley makes his first appearance at nationals as the No. 8 seed in the 12-man field. He comes in with a school-record point total of 3,605, which he set last month while placing third at the IIAC Indoor Championships in Storm Lake.

The pentathlon field features four returning all-Americans, led by top-seeded and defending national champion Todd Wildman of Trinity. The group includes Ben Harmon (third in 2009) of Washington (Mo.), Obinna Nwanna (fourth) of Case Western Reserve and Kurtis Brondyke (sixth) of Central. Other competitors are Josh Lovell of Linfield, Ethan Miller of Central, Matt Borchardt of North Central, Joe Schneiderbauer of North Central, Brock Solveson of Concordia (Wis.), Richard Roethel of Christopher Newport and Jared Engelking of Tufts.

The top eight finishers earn all-America honors.

Wohrley is the program's first male indoor national qualifier since James Klobucar competed in the 55 hurdles in 2006. The last time Cornell crowned a male indoor all-American was in 2004, when Andy Stoecken placed third in the high jump and Ean Caskey took eighth in the 800.

Wohrley came up just one place and seven points short of qualifying for the 2009 national outdoor championships in the decathlon.

"I'm really proud of James," Cornell head coach Lonnie Speidel said. "Ever since James missed nationals last spring, he has been on a mission to be a national qualifier and an all-American in the pentathlon and decathlon this season. He has gotten past the first step of qualifying for the meet. Now he will go up against some of the best athletes in Division III Friday. I'm confident he is physically prepared and I also know he is excited for this challenge."

Ram review - Junior Allie Jagielo (Almond, Wis./Tri-County) and sophomore Adam Rooyakkers (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) both set personal-best marks at the Iowa State University Last-chance Qualifier Saturday in Ames.

Jagielo finished 13th in the women's mile run with a time of 5 minutes, 14.02 seconds. She shaved more than 10 seconds off her previous-best mark this season.

Rooyakkers took 23rd in the men's 800 in 1:55.57. He came within two seconds of earning a national berth in the event.

"I was glad to see both Adam and Allie end their indoor seasons with PRs," Speidel said. "This is a good sign that they are running their best as we transition to the outdoor season. Both have worked hard all year, had good indoor seasons, and will continue to find success outdoors."
