Cornell has tough tests ahead against Loras, Wartburg

Coming up - Saturday, Oct. 10, at Loras, Dubuque, 3:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Wartburg, Waverly, 7 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 17, vs. Central, Mount Vernon, 3 p.m.

Ram rewind - Cornell got struck by a flurry of goals from start to finish in a 10-0 Iowa Conference loss to Luther Saturday in Mount Vernon.

The Rams (3-8 overall, 0-2 IIAC) fell behind 6-0 at halftime after Luther (3-5-1, 1-1) erupted for five goals during a 12-minute stretch late in the first period. The Norse added four more markers in the second half, including a pair in the final four minutes of play.

Luther held a 23-3 advantage in shot attempts and 12-2 in corner kicks. Cornell goalkeeper Ben Alleva (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) finished the match with eight saves. The Rams received one shot apiece from Kobina Essandoh (Worcester, Mass./Presec), William Helland (San Antonio, Texas/International School of Americas) and Alex Beehler (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central).

Tough foes - The road does not get any easier for the Rams, who travel to play Loras Saturday and visit Wartburg Oct. 14. Loras (8-1-1, 2-0), a national semifinalist a year ago, is ranked fifth in the latest NSCAA Division III Top 25 Poll. Wartburg (5-3-1, 1-1) was nationally ranked earlier the year.

Rams in the rankings - Despite Saturday's loss, the Rams rank third in the IIAC in goals (1.82) and points (4.73) per match. Beehler is second in the conference in points (1.09 ppg) and goals (0.45 gpg). Sungeun Kim (Kathmandu, Nepal/Lincoln) stands second in goals (0.45 gpg) and third in points (1.0 ppg). Alleva averages 7.5 saves per match, second in the league.
