Handke named IIAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week
MOUNT VERNON - Cornell College's Chris Handke (Bellevue/Bellevue) has been named the Iowa Conference's Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 1.
Handke, a 6-foot-11 junior center, averaged 13.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks while shooting 57.1 percent (11-of-17) from the field in leading the Rams to a pair of wins last week. He established career highs with 17 points and 14 rebounds to go along with four blocks in a 63-60 win Saturday at Simpson. Handke collected nine points and seven rebounds in a 58-50 home win Wednesday over Luther.
Handke averages 10.7 points and leads the Rams with 6.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game this season. He is shooting 59.3 percent from the floor, which ranks second in the IIAC. Handke ranks third in the league in blocks and fourth in offensive rebounds.
Handke has helped guide the Rams to a 15-5 overall record and an 8-3 mark in the IIAC. The Rams are tied with Loras for second place in the league race. Cornell hosts rival Coe at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3 at the Small Multi-Sport Center in Mount Vernon.
Handke, a 2006 graduate of Bellevue High School, is majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology. He is the son of James and Louan Handke, Bellevue.
