Tierney named IIAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week
MOUNT VERNON - Cornell senior point guard Michael Tierney (Cedar Rapids/Jefferson) has been named the Iowa Conference's Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending March 1.
Tierney averaged 20.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals in a pair of IIAC Tournament games last week. He tossed in a game-high 24 points - 20 in the first half - on 9 of 21 shooting in Cornell's 58-56 victory over Wartburg Saturday night in the championship game. Tierney collected 17 points and eight rebounds in a 65-60 semifinal win over Loras Feb. 26.
Tierney is averaging 17.5 points over his last seven games. For the season, he leads the team in assists (94) and is second in points (14.0) and rebounds (5.1).
Tierney's play last week helped Cornell claim its first ever IIAC Men's Basketball Tournament title and its first trip to the NCAA Division III National Tournament since 1994. The Rams (21-6) play fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point (23-4) in a first-round game at 6 p.m. Friday, March 6 in St. Paul, Minn. The winner advances to play top-ranked St. Thomas (27-0) or Aurora (16-12) at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 7 for a berth in the round of 16.
Tierney, a 2005 graduate of Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School, is majoring in secondary education and kinesiology. He is the son of Rod and Ann Tierney, Cedar Rapids.
